Etsy seller fees explained on one $55 vintage order

Etsy's listing, 6.5% transaction, 3% + $0.25 processing and Offsite Ads fees, worked through one order, with notes on shipping, tax, renewals and refunds.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example vintage scarf sells for $48 plus $7 shipping. Etsy fees come to about $5.68, but if the buyer arrived through an Offsite Ad at 15%, they rise to $13.93 on the same order.

What you’ll get

  • Every Etsy fee in one table.
  • Why shipping is part of the fee base.
  • A full worked order, with and without Offsite Ads.
  • A quick estimate you can do in your head.
  • How renewals add up on slow stock.

Etsy charges at three moments, not one

A new Etsy seller usually notices the 20-cent listing fee and assumes that's most of the cost. It isn't. Etsy takes money when you list, again when the item sells, and a third time when the buyer's payment is processed. Some orders add a fourth charge for advertising. Each is calculated on a slightly different base, so a quick percentage guess often misses by a few dollars per sale.

This guide sets out each fee from Etsy's help pages, checked November 8, 2026, then works one vintage sale through all of them.

The fees, one table

FeeWhat Etsy says it costsCharged on
Listing fee$0.20 per listingEach listing; it expires after 4 months
Auto-renew$0.20Each renewal, when a listing is set to renew
Extra quantity$0.20Each additional unit sold from a multi-quantity listing
Transaction fee6.5%The total order amount, including shipping and gift wrap
Payment processing (US)3% + $0.25The total order, including shipping and sales tax
Offsite Ads15%, or 12% for shops with $10,000+ in sales over 365 daysOrders that came through an Offsite Ad; capped at $100 per order
Currency conversion2.5%Only if you list in a currency different from your payment account

Etsy also mentions a one-time shop set-up fee that varies by location. Check the amount shown when you open a shop rather than relying on a figure from a forum.

The detail that catches people is the base. Both the transaction fee and the processing fee include shipping. Moving $7 from the item price into the shipping price doesn't lower your fees by a cent.

A worked example

In this chosen example, a vintage wool scarf sells for $48 plus $7 shipping. There's no sales tax on the order for simplicity, and the buyer didn't come from an Offsite Ad.

LineCalculationAmount
Order total$48 + $7$55.00
Listing feeflat$0.20
Transaction fee6.5% × $55$3.58
Payment processing3% × $55 + $0.25$1.90
Etsy fees total$5.68

If the scarf cost you $12, the label costs $6.10 and packaging $0.80, the operating surplus is $55 − $5.68 − $12 − $6.10 − $0.80 = $30.42. That's before your time.

Now suppose the same buyer arrived through an Offsite Ad at the 15% rate. That adds 15% × $55 = $8.25, so Etsy fees rise to $13.93 and the surplus falls to $22.17. You don't choose which orders come from ads, so a margin plan that only works without ad fees is fragile.

Sales tax note: In this example tax was zero. Etsy says processing applies to the total including sales tax, so a taxed order pays processing on the tax too, even though the tax isn't yours to keep.

Refunds and fees

Etsy's payment processing article says that when you refund an order, the processing fee is credited back proportionally. Check the current refund rules for the other fees in your shop's payment account rather than assuming every fee comes back.

Step 1: Price from the full order, not the item

Add the shipping you charge to the item price, then apply 6.5% plus 3% plus $0.25. For a quick estimate, 9.5% of the order total plus 45 cents (processing's $0.25 and the $0.20 listing fee) gets you close for a single-unit, untaxed, non-ad order.

Step 2: Decide whether to renew automatically

A listing runs for 4 months, and auto-renew charges another $0.20. For a slow vintage item that may renew three times a year, that's $0.60 a year in listing fees. Small on one item, noticeable on three hundred.

Step 3: Stress-test the ad case

Run every price at the Offsite Ads rate too. If an item only makes sense without the 15%, either raise the price or accept that some sales will be thin. Etsy says shops with $10,000 or more in sales over the past 365 days pay 12%, and the fee is capped at $100 per order.

Step 4: Compare with your other channels

Etsy isn't the only home for vintage. Put the same item through the marketplace net tool with each platform's fees, and read the fees and margins manual for how to think about the comparison. A higher fee can still be worth it if the item sells faster or for more.

Common mistakes

  • Calculating fees on the item price and forgetting shipping is included.
  • Forgetting the processing fee's fixed $0.25, which matters most on small orders.
  • Pricing so tightly that an Offsite Ads order loses money.
  • Counting the payout as profit; the payout is not profit manual explains why.
  • Treating the set-up fee figure from someone else's country as yours.

Know the four numbers

On Etsy, the fee is roughly a tenth of what the buyer pays, plus small fixed charges, and occasionally a large ad fee on top. Put those four numbers into every price, and the payout will stop surprising you.
