Free shipping pricing: build the price for the farthest buyer

Price free-shipping listings from the top of your postage range, with how eBay, Etsy and Mercari fees treat shipping and which items suit free shipping at all.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example pair of boots costs $9.20 to post nearby and $14.60 to the farthest zone. A free-shipping price built on the nearby rate loses $5.40 on every long-distance order; one built at $70.00 covers them all.

What you’ll get

  • Why sellers offer free shipping.
  • How platform fees treat shipping.
  • A postage range, not one number.
  • A worked free-shipping price.
  • Which items suit free shipping.

Free shipping is a price, not a gift

"Free shipping" means the postage is inside the item price instead of on a separate line. The buyer still pays it, and you still pay the carrier. What changes is how the price looks in search, how fees are calculated, and who absorbs the difference when a parcel costs more to send than you expected. Done carelessly, free shipping quietly turns profitable items into losses on long-distance orders.

This guide shows how to build a free-shipping price that covers postage, fees and a buffer, using fee rules from eBay, Etsy and Mercari checked November 8, 2026.

Why sellers offer it

eBay's "Create great listings" seller page says buyers prefer free shipping but notes it may not be possible for certain items, and suggests considering which listings are less affected if you offer it. That's a fair summary of the trade-off: free shipping can make a listing more attractive, but only on items where the postage is predictable and modest relative to the price.

How fees treat shipping

On the major platforms, folding shipping into the price usually doesn't change your fees much, because many already include shipping in the fee base:

PlatformWhat the fee page says about shipping
eBayThe final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, including shipping and sales tax
EtsyThe 6.5% transaction fee applies to the order total including shipping; payment processing applies to the total including shipping and tax
MercariThe 10% selling fee applies to the item price plus buyer-paid shipping

So moving $8 of postage from a shipping line into the item price leaves the fee roughly the same on these platforms. The real risk isn't fees; it's postage variation.

Step 1: Weigh and measure the packed parcel

Postage depends on the packed weight, dimensions and distance. Weigh the item in its box with padding, not the item alone. The packed box before price manual explains why the difference is often larger than people expect.

Step 2: Find the postage range, not one number

Check label prices for a nearby destination and a far one. In this chosen example, a packed pair of boots weighing a little over 3 pounds costs:

Destination, exampleLabel cost
Nearby$9.20
Mid-distance$11.40
Farthest$14.60

If you price free shipping using the nearby rate, every long-distance order loses $5.40 against your plan.

Step 3: Build the price from the top of the range

Use the higher end of the range plus a small packaging allowance:

LineAmount
Price with buyer-paid shipping$55.00
Postage, upper end of range$14.60
Packaging$0.90
Free-shipping price, before rounding$70.50
Rounded$70.00

At $70.00, a nearby buyer means you keep extra, and a far buyer means you roughly break even with the buyer-paid version. Averaged across orders, you come out about level.

Step 4: Check fees on the new price

Because fees apply to the total on these platforms, a $55 item with $15 buyer-paid shipping and a $70 free-shipping item carry about the same fee. Run the number anyway with the marketplace net tool, since rates and bases differ, and Etsy and eBay also include tax in part of their fee base.

Step 5: Decide which items get free shipping

Free shipping suits:

  • Light, compact items where the postage range is narrow.
  • Items where the price comfortably absorbs the top postage rate.
  • Categories where buyers filter for it.

It's a poor fit for:

  • Heavy, bulky or fragile items with wide postage ranges.
  • Low-priced items where postage is a large share of the price.

eBay's page also points to Seller Hub discounts such as Volume Pricing and Order Size Discounts for sending more than one item in a shipment. Those can encourage multi-item orders without free shipping on every item. The bundle pricing guide covers that approach.

Step 6: Review after a month

Compare the postage you actually paid with what you built into the price. If long-distance orders are more common than you assumed, raise the buffer. The shipping manual has more on carrier choices.

A quick check with the mini calculator

Use the calculator on this page: enter your free-shipping price, then what you paid for the item, then all other costs together, meaning the top postage, packaging and fees. The example uses $70.00, a $12.00 item cost and $24.50 of other costs ($14.60 postage, $0.90 packaging and an assumed $9.00 in fees). If what's left is too thin, the item should keep buyer-paid shipping.

Common mistakes

  • Pricing free shipping from the cheapest destination.
  • Weighing the item without its packaging.
  • Assuming free shipping lowers fees.
  • Offering free shipping on heavy items with wide postage ranges.
  • Never checking actual postage against the plan.

Price the far order

A free-shipping price is safe when it still works for the buyer farthest away. Build it from the top of your postage range, and the nearby orders become the bonus.

$70.00 receipts − $12.00 acquisition − $24.50 other costs = $33.50 operating surplus before income tax and omitted labor/overhead. Other costs must include relevant fees, postage, packing, repairs and return exposure once each.

Practical questions

Does free shipping lower my fees?

Usually not. eBay and Etsy include shipping in their fee base, and Mercari applies its fee to item price plus buyer-paid shipping.

Which postage rate should I build in?

The upper end of your range, so far-away orders don’t lose money. Nearby orders then leave a little extra.

Does eBay recommend free shipping?

eBay’s seller page says buyers prefer free shipping but it may not be possible for certain items, so choose what’s right for your business.

What items should keep buyer-paid shipping?

Heavy, bulky or fragile items with wide postage ranges, and low-priced items where postage is a big share of the price.
