Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example buyer says a jacket “isn’t as pictured.” The listing showed both sleeves, named the faded cuff and gave measurements. That listing is now your best evidence.

On Mercari, the return decision belongs to Mercari
Mercari does not ask sellers to set a return policy. Instead, it reviews buyer return requests against its own rules and decides whether an item is eligible. As a seller, that means your best protection is not a policy you write but a listing that matches the item exactly, and a response to any request that is fast, calm and backed by evidence.
This guide explains what Mercari says about returns, as checked on November 8, 2026, and what you can do at each stage.
Step 1: Know what qualifies for a return
Mercari's returns and refunds article says buyers can request a return if the item is significantly different from the listing, or inauthentic or counterfeit. Requests must be made before the transaction is completed. Mercari automatically rates a transaction within 72 hours of carrier-confirmed delivery, and once a transaction is complete, it says returns or refunds are not permitted.
It also lists reasons that are generally not approved:
| Generally not approved | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|
| The buyer changed their mind | Your listing accuracy is what counts |
| Minor cosmetic flaws, scratches, dents or packaging wear that don't affect function | Still disclose them to avoid disputes |
| Carrier or weather delays | Not a condition problem |
| Odor, pet dander or fur, unless materially different from the listing | Say if your home has pets or smoke |
| Lots or large bundles without an itemized list or photos | Itemize every lot you sell |
Mercari says that if a buyer's concern is not eligible, the seller may choose to accept a return but is not required to.
Step 2: Make your listing your evidence
Most return disputes come down to one question: does the item match the listing? Before you list, photograph every side, the labels, the flaws and the item powered on if it is electronic. Describe each flaw in words as well. For lots, list every item and show them in the photos.
Before you ship, take a quick photo of the item in the package and the sealed parcel. Mercari's bundle guide suggests photographing packages before and after taping, and that habit helps for single items too.
Pet and smoke check: Because Mercari treats odor and pet hair as a possible issue when it is materially different from the listing, a short line such as "from a home with a cat" can prevent a dispute.
Step 3: When a return request arrives
Open the request and read the buyer's reason and photos carefully. Then:
- Compare their photos with your listing photos and your packing photos.
- Reply through Mercari's messages, politely, with any relevant facts.
- Answer any information request from Mercari Support within its deadline.
- Avoid arranging returns or refunds outside the app.
Mercari says buyers should request returns through the Order Status or Rating page so the transaction is paused, and that requests made elsewhere may not be reviewed. Keep your own communication inside the app too.
Step 4: Approved returns and labels
If Mercari approves a return, its article says the cost of return shipping is covered for eligible items up to 50 lbs on orders that used a Mercari prepaid label, and Mercari emails the buyer a label. For items over 50 lbs in actual or dimensional weight, the seller is responsible for providing the return label and has 3 days to do so; if they don't, the order may be canceled and the buyer refunded.
Mercari also says sellers must provide a valid return address, and that if a return is undeliverable because the address is invalid or insufficient, the seller may be responsible for additional costs.
Step 5: Inspect what comes back
Mercari says returned items must be unworn, unwashed, unmodified and include original tags where applicable, and that sellers must contact Mercari within 24 hours if a returned item arrives damaged. Open returns promptly, ideally on camera, and compare the item with your original photos.
| On arrival | Your action |
|---|---|
| Item matches what you sent | Confirm through the app as directed |
| Item damaged or different | Photograph it and contact Mercari within 24 hours |
| Wrong item returned | Photograph labels and contents; contact Mercari |
The return arrives manual explains how to document a return without accusing the buyer.
Worked example: a disclosed flaw versus an undisclosed one
In this chosen example, you sell two identical mugs. One listing shows and describes a small glaze chip; the other does not mention a similar chip. Both buyers request returns citing the chip. The first listing disclosed the flaw, so the item matches its description. The second did not, so the buyer can reasonably say the item is significantly different. The only difference is one photo and one sentence.
Common mistakes
- Relying on "minor flaws aren't returnable" instead of disclosing them.
- Selling lots without listing what is in them.
- Agreeing to returns or refunds outside the app.
- Waiting more than a day to report a damaged return.
- Leaving an old or incomplete return address on the account.
Protect yourself before the sale
On Mercari, your listing photos and description are your return policy. Show and describe every flaw, itemize every lot, and keep packing photos so any review starts from evidence.
