Etsy vintage age proof: build the evidence file before Etsy asks

Prove an item meets Etsy's 20-year vintage rule with label photos, dating notes and sourcing records, and know the appeal limits before a listing is removed.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example seller lists a graphic tee with a printed 2004 copyright line. In November 2026 it is 22 years old, and the photo of that line is the evidence. A 2011 lamp in the same lot does not qualify.

What you’ll get

  • Etsy's vintage rule and the date that counts.
  • What Etsy says it may ask about.
  • Explanations Etsy won’t accept as proof.
  • An evidence routine to follow while listing.
  • Etsy's appeal limits and timings.

"Vintage" on Etsy is a claim you may have to prove

On most marketplaces, calling something vintage is a description. On Etsy, it decides whether the listing is allowed at all. Etsy permits reselling in only a few situations, and vintage is the main one for most resellers. If a removed listing goes to appeal, your word that a jacket "is definitely from the 90s" won't carry it. Evidence will.

This guide covers Etsy's age threshold, the evidence Etsy says it may ask for, and how to build a small proof file while you list, rather than scrambling after a removal.

The rule: at least 20 years old

Etsy's help article "What Can I Sell on Etsy?", checked November 8, 2026, says every item must be made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller, and that vintage items, which fall under "Handpicked by a seller", must be at least 20 years old. Its separate article on drop shipping and reselling repeats the point: reselling is allowed for vintage items over 20 years old, plus some craft and party supplies and seller-curated gift baskets. Reselling is not allowed in the Handmade category.

So the date that matters is the item's age today, not when the style was popular. In November 2026, an item made in November 2006 or earlier meets the threshold. A 2010 reproduction of a 1970s design does not, however convincing it looks.

What Etsy may ask about

Etsy's vintage items policy page lists the kinds of questions Etsy may ask a seller about vintage stock: where and how the item was sourced, how its age was determined, the designer, collection or year where known, the materials of the fabric, label or zipper, and photographic documentation. It also says deadstock (old, unsold stock) needs an explanation.

The same policy names explanations that Etsy won't accept on their own as proof of age, including that the item was inherited from a relative who died more than 20 years ago, that another seller lists the same item, or that it was bought at an estate or yard sale. Those may be true; they just don't date the object.

Step 1: Photograph the evidence, not just the item

Alongside your normal listing photos, take a separate set of evidence photos for anything you sell as vintage:

  • Every label, front and back, including care tags.
  • Copyright lines, date stamps, patent numbers and maker's marks.
  • Construction details you relied on: zippers, seams, closures, stitching.
  • Packaging, if the item is deadstock.

Keep these even if you don't put all of them in the listing. Etsy's appeal article says handpicked sellers can support an appeal with images or videos of their stock and packaging.

Step 2: Write down how you dated it

Write one or two sentences per item recording what you relied on, for example: "Copyright 2004 printed under the graphic; care label format matches the print date." Don't claim a precise year you can't support. "Early 2000s, based on the printed copyright line" is honest; "2001" with no basis is not.

Step 3: Record where it came from

Note the source and date of purchase: the estate sale address range, the auction lot number, the thrift store. Etsy won't accept "bought at an estate sale" as proof of age, but a sourcing record still answers the "where did this come from" question and supports your other evidence.

Step 4: Keep the file where you can find it

An appeal is easier with one folder per item named by SKU. Etsy's appeal article, checked November 8, 2026, sets the practical limits:

  • You generally have up to 6 months from removal to appeal.
  • Appeals are filed one listing at a time from Policy violations in Shop Manager.
  • For appeals under Creativity Standards you can attach up to 12 photos, videos or documents; photos and documents must be larger than 120KB, and videos must be 3 minutes or less and no more than 500MB.
  • Most reviews finish within 3 days but can take up to 10–12 business days.
  • Once an appeal is denied, you can't appeal the same listing again.

That last point is the reason to prepare before listing. You get one appeal, so it should contain your best evidence the first time. The photo file system guide shows a naming scheme that keeps evidence shots beside listing photos.

When you can't establish age

Some items simply can't be dated with confidence. You have three honest choices: research further, sell the item on a marketplace without a vintage age rule, or skip it. Listing it as vintage on Etsy and hoping is the one choice that risks the shop. Etsy's appeal article warns that multiple policy violations can cost a Star Seller badge or lead to account suspension.

Common mistakes

  • Treating "vintage style" or "retro" as vintage.
  • Counting from the decade the style was popular instead of the date the item was made.
  • Relying on "it was my grandmother's" as the only evidence.
  • Throwing away labels or packaging that showed the date.
  • Filing a rushed appeal with weak photos and losing the only chance.

Proof travels with the item

If you can't show how you know an item is 20 years old, you are not ready to list it as vintage on Etsy. Build the evidence file as you list, and an appeal becomes a matter of attaching what you already have.

Practical questions

How old must an item be to count as vintage on Etsy?

At least 20 years old, according to Etsy's What Can I Sell article. In November 2026, that means made in November 2006 or earlier.

Is "it was my grandmother’s" enough proof?

Not on its own. Etsy's vintage policy lists inheritance from a relative who died more than 20 years ago among explanations it won't accept as proof of age.

How many files can I attach to an appeal?

Etsy's appeal article allows up to 12 photos, videos or documents for appeals under Creativity Standards. Photos and documents must be larger than 120KB.

Can I appeal twice?

No. Etsy says that once an appeal is denied, you can’t submit another appeal for the same removed listing.
