Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
You find an example dress labelled vintage style but have no age evidence. It may look old and still be too new for Etsy vintage. Adding a handmade gift tag does not turn ordinary resale into something you made.
What you’ll get
- Distinguish vintage age from vintage styling.
- Understand that resale exceptions are limited.
- Build an eligibility evidence note before sourcing for Etsy.
Etsy is not a general resale escape hatch
As of November 8, 2026, Etsy's official guidance describes items made, designed, handpicked or sourced by the seller, subject to its detailed standards. Its resale exceptions include qualifying craft and party supplies, vintage items, and certain personally selected and creatively packaged gift collections.
Those categories have boundaries. The official resale page says fully resold gift baskets are not allowed, and adding a note to an unaltered commercial product does not make ordinary resale acceptable. Read the full current standard for your actual item.
Vintage needs age evidence
Etsy's What Can I Sell page states that vintage items are at least 20 years old. A retro print or a seller's confident decade label is not evidence. Look for defensible manufacturing dates, labels, catalog documentation or other reliable item-specific records.
Keep uncertainty visible. If you cannot support the age, do not publish a vintage claim and hope the buyer will resolve it. Consider another permitted selling route only if you can make a truthful offer there as well.
Worked example: two ages and one unknown
The table compares hypothetical ages rather than identifying real products. A 15-year-old dress is below the vintage-age requirement. A dress supported as 22 years old may clear the age question, but that alone does not establish authenticity, lawful saleability or every Etsy rule.
An unknown-age dress does not become eligible because its silhouette resembles the older example. Neither a low acquisition price nor the cost of your styling work changes its manufacturing history.
Do the eligibility check before the sourcing plan
Write the route you intend to rely on and its evidence before buying stock specifically for Etsy. Check photographs and descriptions against the same record. Do not describe yourself as the maker of an item you merely acquired.
A permitted marketplace comes after an honest product identity. If the eligibility case depends on a word you cannot substantiate, the next step is research or passing—not a more persuasive title.

Keep the example in view
| Illustrative item age | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| 15 years | Below the at-least-20-year vintage requirement |
| 22 years with supporting evidence | Age may qualify; other rules still apply |
| Unknown age, retro appearance | Does not establish vintage eligibility |

Practical questions
Can I resell anything on Etsy if I call it curated?
No. Etsy permits limited resale exceptions and describes specific standards. A label such as curated does not override them or the prohibited-item policy.
Does vintage style meet the vintage age rule?
No. Etsy states that vintage items must be at least 20 years old. Appearance, trend language or an unsupported seller description does not establish that age.
