Reselling craft supplies on Etsy: which parts of the lot qualify?

Sort a craft-room lot against Etsy's allowed and not-allowed supply lists, spot the usable-as-is trap, and price the lot by what Etsy will actually accept.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example $40 craft-room lot sorts into 60 items. Only 25 qualify under Etsy’s craft-supply rules, so each Etsy-eligible item carries $1.60 of the lot price, not $0.67.

What you’ll get

  • Where Etsy's reselling exception comes from.
  • Allowed categories, with Etsy’s examples.
  • What doesn’t qualify, including blanks.
  • A three-pile sort for any craft lot.
  • Lot pricing by eligible count.

Etsy's craft-supply exception is narrower than it sounds

Estate sales and craft-room clear-outs often come with boxes of yarn, fabric, beads, stamps and machines. Etsy is the obvious place for them, because it lets sellers resell craft supplies without making them. The catch is that Etsy decides what counts as a craft supply, and a lot of ordinary objects that crafters happen to use don't qualify.

This guide sorts a typical craft lot against Etsy's allowed and not-allowed examples, checked November 8, 2026, then prices the lot by what you can actually list.

Where the exception comes from

Etsy's article on drop shipping and reselling says reselling is allowed in only a few cases: craft and party supplies, vintage items over 20 years old, and gift baskets the seller curates. Its separate article "What Craft and Party Supplies am I Allowed to Sell?" explains the test. Supplies must not be ready-to-use commercial products being resold. Listings that don't comply with Etsy's Creativity Standards may be taken down.

What Etsy says is allowed

Etsy's list is long. A few of its categories and examples:

CategoryExamples Etsy gives
Textile craftsYarn, thread, fabric, needles, crochet hooks, embroidery hoops, patterns
Paper craftsScrapbook paper, cardstock, stamps, ink pads, die cutting machines
Jewelry-makingBeads, charms, findings, pliers, resin molds
Painting and drawingBrushes, canvas, easels, acrylic paints, pastels
Craft machinesSewing machines, die-cutters, heat presses, Cricut machines
Craft booksNew or vintage books with instructions for craft projects
Qualifying blanksBlank items with no independent retail market outside crafting, such as bare metal jewelry findings

What Etsy says doesn't qualify

The same article lists resold items that don't qualify, including:

  • Items usable as-is without more crafting, even if a crafter could use them; Etsy's example is a blank Hanes t-shirt.
  • Blanks like plain tumblers, phone cases, t-shirts or canvas bags.
  • Home DIY supplies such as drawer pulls, knobs and house numbers.
  • Office supplies, including stationery, envelopes and shipping supplies.
  • General construction tools like power drills and standard hammers, as opposed to specialized craft tools.
  • Generic cooking tools, gardening tools, hazardous materials, cosmetics, and non-craft kits.

For party supplies, Etsy allows items made for celebrations, such as banners, cake toppers and gift wrap, but excludes costumes, furniture, plain candles, seasonal home decor like ornaments, party favors and religious supplies.

Step 1: Sort the lot into Etsy, elsewhere and out

In this chosen example, a craft-room lot costs $40 and holds 60 distinct items or bundles once sorted. Going through Etsy's lists:

PileCountExamples
Allowed on Etsy25Yarn bundles, a sewing machine, beading pliers, two vintage pattern books
Sell elsewhere22Plain canvas tote bags, a cordless drill, envelopes, picture frames
Donate or discard13Dried-out paint, broken tools, scraps too small to bundle

Only 25 of the 60 belong on Etsy. The 22 in the middle pile are perfectly saleable, just not under the craft exception. The cross-listing manual covers putting those on general marketplaces.

Step 2: Price the lot by what you can list

Spread across all 60 piles, the lot looks like $0.67 per item. Spread across the 25 Etsy-allowed piles, it's $1.60 each, and that's the figure to compare with Etsy prices. If the other 22 sell elsewhere, they bring the effective cost back down, but only once they actually sell. The lot reality tool runs this split for any lot.

Step 3: Check machines before listing

Sewing machines and other craft machines are allowed, but they still need testing and honest condition notes. The sewing machine guide covers the checks. Etsy's prohibited list includes recalled items, so look up the model on CPSC's recall site before listing any machine with a motor or heating element.

Step 4: Watch the "usable as-is" line

The hardest calls are blanks. A bag of raw jewelry findings qualifies; a pack of plain t-shirts doesn't, because people buy and wear them as-is. Ask one question: does anyone outside crafting buy this exact thing to use as it is? If yes, it probably isn't a qualifying blank.

Step 5: Describe supplies for makers

Craft buyers want quantities, weights, fiber content, dye lots and dimensions. A yarn bundle listing that gives the weight, the fiber and how many skeins share a dye lot answers the questions a maker will ask before they ask them.

Common mistakes

  • Listing office supplies or shipping materials as craft supplies.
  • Calling plain blanks "craft blanks" when they are ordinary retail products.
  • Treating costumes or seasonal ornaments as party supplies.
  • Pricing a lot by its total item count instead of the Etsy-eligible count.
  • Skipping the recall check on machines.

Ask what the item is for

On Etsy, a craft supply is something a maker turns into something else, not just something a crafter might use. Sort with that test first, and the lot price will tell you the truth about the deal.

$40.00 total acquisition cash across 60 pieces looks like $0.67 per piece. If only 25 are suitable saleable units, the operational burden is $1.60 each. Unsuitable remainder has no assumed proceeds. This is not a tax allocation or an assurance any item is safe or will sell.
