Write a Depop description that is short, specific and checkable

Write Depop descriptions buyers trust: a searchable title, measurements, condition in plain words, relevant tags only and photos that match every claim.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example sweater listing says “so cozy, great condition” with five trending hashtags. The rewrite gives size, pit-to-pit, length, fabric and one named flaw in about the same length.

What you’ll get

  • What Depop recommends including.
  • A seven-line description layout.
  • Vague condition words and their specific versions.
  • A tags-and-keywords rule.
  • A before-and-after rewrite.

A Depop description is a fact sheet with a voice

Depop buyers often browse by style, but they buy on detail: will it fit, what condition is it in, what exactly comes with it. Depop's own advice is to keep descriptions short and to the point while giving as much relevant information as possible, because complete listings are easier to match to buyer searches. That sounds contradictory until you separate the two jobs: the facts must be complete, and the style must be brief.

This guide builds a description that does both.

What Depop recommends

Depop's "Tips for describing your item" article, checked November 8, 2026, says to include:

  • A title with relevant words you would search for as a buyer.
  • Measurements and fit notes, because sizes vary between brands.
  • The condition of the item, noting any flaws or signs of wear.
  • Shipping information and any bundle options.

It also asks you to complete the item details: category and subcategory, brand, price, up to two colors, style and quantity where applicable. It says to include only relevant words, hashtags, brands and tags, and notes that Depop automatically generates tags and keywords, which you can keep or replace.

Step 1: Write the title as a search

Start with what a buyer types: brand, item type, a defining detail, color and size. "Levi's 501 straight leg jeans, mid wash, W30 L32" is searchable. "Perfect vintage denim vibes" is not. Put era or style words after the facts, and only if they're accurate.

Step 2: Structure the description

A layout that keeps descriptions short but complete:

LineContentExample
1What it isLevi's 501 jeans, button fly, mid wash
2Size and measurementsTag W30 L32; waist 15" flat, inseam 31", rise 11"
3Fit noteFits like a modern 29; straight through the leg
4Material100% cotton, no stretch
5ConditionLight fading at knees; small mark on back pocket (photo 6)
6IncludedJeans only
7Shipping and bundlesShips within 2 days; bundle discount on 2+ items

Measurements are the most important line for clothing. Depop specifically mentions that sizes vary between brands. Lay the garment flat and measure the points that matter for its type; the thrift clothing measurements manual lists them.

Step 3: Describe condition in plain words

Name each flaw, say where it is and point to the photo that shows it. Avoid vague words that mean different things to different people.

VagueSpecific
"Some wear""Light pilling under both arms"
"Vintage condition""Faded print; small hole at left hem (photo 5)"
"Barely worn""Worn twice; no marks or pulls"
"Small flaw""1 cm stain on right cuff, not tested for removal"

Depop's guide on "significantly not as described" lists major wear or flaws not detailed on the listing, incorrect sizes and wrong colors among issues it covers for buyers. A specific condition line protects you from exactly those claims.

Claims check: Only describe an item as vintage, a particular decade, deadstock or a specific designer line if you can support it from labels or other evidence. Depop also lists counterfeit items among the issues it treats as significantly not as described.

Step 4: Keep tags and keywords relevant

Depop's tips say to include only relevant words, hashtags, brands and tags, and to keep it short and to the point. Adding unrelated brands or trending words to catch searches makes your listing less trustworthy and is not what Depop recommends. Use the tags Depop suggests, check they're accurate, and add style terms that genuinely describe the item.

Step 5: Match the photos

Depop recommends plenty of photos, especially showing any flaws. Before publishing, read each line of the description and check there's a photo that supports it, and that every flaw in the photos is mentioned in words.

Worked example: rewriting a description

In this chosen example, a seller's original description reads: "Vintage oversized sweater, so cozy, perfect for fall, great condition, #vintage #y2k #grunge #cottagecore #aesthetic." It has no measurements, no material and no flaws. The rewrite reads: "Oversized cable-knit sweater, cream. Tag L; pit to pit 24", length 27". 80% acrylic, 20% wool. Light pilling on sleeves (photo 4); no holes or stains. Ships in 2 days." The rewrite is a similar length, but every claim can be checked.

Common mistakes

  • No measurements, only a tag size.
  • Calling wear "vintage condition" without saying what it is.
  • Era or designer claims without evidence.
  • Long lists of unrelated hashtags.
  • Description and photos that don't agree.

The condition descriptions manual covers wording for other item types.

Short, specific and checkable

A good Depop description reads in ten seconds and answers every fit and condition question a buyer has. Lead with facts, measure everything and describe flaws in words the buyer can find in the photos.
