Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example seller with a 90 rating sells used sneakers for $120 on GOAT and banks $100.60 after commission, the $5 shipping fee and cash-out. One earlier cancellation would have cut that to $94.19.

GOAT takes used sneakers, but on its terms
Unlike marketplaces that only want deadstock, GOAT accepts used and defective sneakers from approved sellers. That makes it a natural home for a clean pair of worn runners or a rare pair with a scuffed box. It also means GOAT's rules about photos, condition and shipping matter more, because a used pair that doesn't match its listing can cost you a fee, a discount or a seller-rating drop.
This guide covers GOAT's selling policy and fee policy, both updated August 1, 2026 and checked November 8, 2026, and works a used-pair sale through the numbers.
Who can sell
GOAT's selling policy says selling is available to select sellers, who are approved on a rolling basis. Check your account's status before buying pairs specifically to sell there.
How a GOAT listing works
| Step | What GOAT's selling policy says |
|---|---|
| Create the listing | Submit by product SKU, size, condition and price |
| Photos | Required for used or defective items; flaws must be photographed |
| After a sale | Ship within 3 business days, or the order may be cancelled with a $10 fee |
| Packing | Each shoebox in its own cardboard shipping box, with only GOAT's prepaid label |
| If GOAT finds an issue | GOAT may ask you to accept a discount; with no reply in 48 hours, a 5% discount is applied automatically |
| Item-issue and replica fees | $10 item-issue fee; $15 replica fee |
| Cash out | Allowed above $10, with a 2.9% fee; payouts take 3–5 business days |
GOAT's fees for US sellers
GOAT's fee policy lists a commission of 9.5% plus a seller fee. For US sellers, the seller fee is $0 if you drop off and $5 if you use GOAT's prepaid shipping.
The commission depends on your seller rating:
| Seller rating | Commission |
|---|---|
| 90 and above (new sellers start at 90) | 9.5% |
| 70–89 | 15% |
| 50–69 | 20% |
| Below 50 | 25%, and the account may be reviewed |
The rating falls by 10 for each cancellation and rises by 2 for each completed sale. One cancellation takes a new seller from 90 to 80, which moves them into the 15% commission tier until five completed sales bring them back to 90.
A worked example
In this chosen example, a seller with a rating of 90 sells a pair of used sneakers for $120 using prepaid shipping.
| Line | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $120.00 | |
| Commission | 9.5% × $120 | −$11.40 |
| Seller fee, prepaid shipping | flat | −$5.00 |
| Available balance | $103.60 | |
| Cash-out fee | 2.9% × $103.60 | −$3.00 |
| Paid to your bank | $100.60 |
Now suppose an earlier cancellation dropped the rating to 80. The commission becomes 15% × $120 = $18.00, the balance $97.00, and after cash-out $94.19. One cancellation cost $6.41 on this pair alone.
Step 1: Grade the pair honestly
GOAT asks for the condition when you list, and photos for used pairs. Check:
- Uppers: creasing, scuffs, stains.
- Midsoles: yellowing, paint chips, cracks.
- Outsoles: tread wear, especially at the heel.
- Insoles: wear, odor, missing or replaced.
- Box: original, damaged, or missing.
The sneakers guide covers wear checks in more detail.
Step 2: Photograph every flaw
GOAT's policy says flaws must be photographed. Take close-ups of each scuff, crease and stain, plus the size tag and the outsole. A flaw you didn't show is exactly what triggers GOAT's discount request after inspection. The showing defects guide explains how to light flaws so they're visible.
Step 3: Only list pairs you can ship within 3 business days
Because cancellations cost $10 and 10 rating points, don't list a pair you might want to keep, or one stored somewhere you can't reach quickly. Keep listed pairs together, labeled by SKU and size.
Step 4: Pack exactly as GOAT says
Put each shoebox inside its own cardboard shipping box and use only GOAT's prepaid label. Don't ship the shoebox alone with a label stuck to it.
Step 5: Respond to discount requests within 48 hours
If GOAT finds an issue and asks for a discount, reply. GOAT says no response in 48 hours means a 5% discount is applied automatically. On a $120 pair, that's $6.00 you didn't get to decide on.
Step 6: Check authenticity before buying to resell
GOAT charges a $15 replica fee if an item is a replica. Buying from unreliable sources risks both the loss of the pair and the fee. The authenticity before price manual covers point-of-purchase checks.
Common mistakes
- Listing used pairs without photographing every flaw.
- Cancelling a sale and dropping into a higher commission tier.
- Forgetting the $5 prepaid-shipping seller fee and the 2.9% cash-out fee.
- Missing the 48-hour window on discount requests.
- Shipping shoeboxes without an outer box.
Protect the rating
On GOAT, your seller rating sets your commission, so every cancellation costs money on future sales. List only pairs you can ship within three business days, show every flaw, and the 9.5% rate stays yours.
