Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
Your $50 item has $8 buyer shipping. The fee is not simply a percentage of $50. Follow one eligible order all the way to the cost stack.

The fee base and your receipts answer different questions.
Start with the schedule, not a percentage remembered from an old video. The eBay US selling-fees page distinguishes category rates, Store subscriptions, optional services and other charges. This guide follows only its non-Store “Most categories” row, for one item in one ordinary domestic order. It is not a universal eBay fee quote.
Read the fee base before the rate
The official page includes item price, applicable handling and buyer shipping, sales tax and other applicable amounts in the total amount of the sale. Shipping exceptions exist, including certain expedited and international arrangements. The simple profile does not model those exceptions.
Marketplace-collected buyer sales tax can therefore increase this fee base without becoming money you keep. Enter the actual collected amount when known; do not invent a state tax rate. Before a sale, any entered amount is only an assumption.
The published profile and its boundaries
Official schedule checked November 8, 2026: 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, then 2.35% on the portion above, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 for orders of $10 or less, or $0.40 above $10. The source is linked below and in the marketplace calculator.
This is not the books/media row, the trading-card row, the watches row, a Store rate or a promise about your account. Use the full official table when the item belongs to an exception. Multi-item orders require different allocation work and are outside this profile.
Work one explicitly hypothetical order
Assume an eligible $50 item, $8 ordinary buyer shipping credited to the seller, and zero buyer sales tax solely to isolate the arithmetic. The fee base is $58. At the published profile, $58 × 13.6% + $0.40 = $8.288, displayed as an estimated $8.29 after rounding.
Now choose $16 acquisition, $8 actual postage and $2 packing. Receipts of $58 minus $8.29 fee and $26 other costs leave $23.71 before income tax and omitted expenses. These are chosen example costs, not shipping quotes or achievable resale prices. The bank deposit need not equal that figure.
Add what the headline fee leaves out
Check insertion and renewal charges, promoted-listing charges, subscriptions, performance-related additions, international or currency costs and applicable tax on fees. Do not assume every addition is zero just because it is absent from the calculator.
Put known extras into other costs without counting the main selling fee twice. If your actual fee base differs, use the editable tools and written account terms instead of forcing an unsuitable profile to fit.
Reconcile the result after the sale
Match the order details, fee statement, shipping-label charge and payout. Explain any difference before changing your next sourcing limit. A repeatable estimate is useful; a remembered percentage that silently misses the tax or shipping base is not.
Worked example · hypothetical, not a real seller
An eligible one-item fee example rebuilt line by line
This matches the labelled $50 item + $8 shipping illustration in the text: $16 acquisition and $18.29 combined fee/postage/packing, including the $8.29 estimated selling fee. Zero buyer sales tax is assumed only to isolate this example; enter the real amount when known.
$58.00 receipts − $16.00 acquisition − $18.29 other costs = $23.71 operating surplus before income tax and omitted labor/overhead. Other costs must include relevant fees, postage, packing, repairs and return exposure once each.
| Measure | Example value |
|---|---|
| Receipts ($) | 58 |
| All costs ($) | 34.29 |
| Surplus ($) | 23.71 |

Does this fee profile apply to books or trading cards?
No blanket claim is made. The calculator models only the official Most categories non-Store US row, with one item and ordinary domestic shipping. Books, cards and other exception categories can use different rates. Check the official category and account schedule.
Do this next · one concrete move
Check the category before using the preset
Use only the cited US non-Store most-categories profile for an eligible one-item ordinary domestic order. Books, cards, Stores, shipping exceptions and account additions require their own official terms.
