Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example buyer opens a case: “jeans smaller than listed.” The listing gave a 14-inch flat waist, about 28 inches around, and showed the tag. The measurement line just did its job.

Poshmark decides return cases; sellers supply the evidence
Poshmark sales are generally final. Under Posh Protect, a buyer can only open a return case for specific problems, within a short window after delivery, and Poshmark reviews the case rather than the seller deciding it. For a seller, that means the work is done before the sale: describe and photograph the item accurately, ship it as described and keep proof of what you sent.
Here is how the process works and how to prepare for it.
Step 1: Know what Posh Protect covers
Poshmark's Posh Protect page, checked November 8, 2026, says buyers have 72 hours after delivery, based on the shipping label's tracking, to report a problem in the app or website with supporting photos, for these reasons:
- Incorrect or missing item.
- Item not as described.
- Item is not authentic.
- Order never shipped or received.
It says that if Poshmark verifies the claim, it sends the buyer a label to return the order and refunds their payment, and returns must be shipped within 5 days of approval. If no case is opened within 3 days of delivery, payment is released to the seller automatically, and after that all sales are final.
| Not covered by Posh Protect | What it means for sellers |
|---|---|
| Doesn't fit or changed mind | Not a return reason, but accurate measurements still prevent unhappy buyers |
| Trades and offline transactions | No protection if payment happens outside Poshmark |
The page also says emailing Poshmark Support does not qualify as opening a return case, and that buyers who accept an order can no longer open a case.
Step 2: Prevent "not as described" before listing
Most cases come down to whether the item matches the listing. Poshmark's November 2026 seller guide encourages photos of the back, tag, fabric close-ups and flaws, and descriptions that cover measurements, fabric content, fit and condition, saying that describing a small mark upfront protects everyone.
| Common case reason | Prevention |
|---|---|
| Size not as listed | Photograph the size tag; add measurements |
| Flaw not shown | Photograph and describe each flaw |
| Color looks different | Shoot in natural light; name the color accurately |
| Item not authentic | Sell only items you can stand behind; show labels and tags |
| Missing piece | List every included piece; photograph them together |
The Poshmark photos guide and the condition descriptions manual go further.
Step 3: Keep a shipping record
Before sealing the parcel, take a quick photo of the item with the packing slip or order number, and of the sealed package with the label. Keep the drop-off receipt or scan confirmation. If a buyer says the item is missing or different, these photos show what left your hands.
Off-platform rule: Posh Protect doesn't cover trades or transactions completed outside Poshmark. If a buyer asks to pay you another way, decline. You lose the protection and the evidence trail.
Step 4: Respond to a case calmly
If a buyer opens a case, read their photos and description carefully, then respond through the app with facts and your own photos. Avoid accusations. Compare their photos with your listing; if the item genuinely differs, accepting that and handling the return gracefully protects your reputation.
Step 5: Inspect the returned item
When the item comes back, open it promptly, ideally recording the unboxing, and compare it with your original photos. If it isn't the item you sent, is damaged or has been worn, photograph everything and contact Poshmark Support through the app straight away. The return arrives manual explains how to record a return objectively.
Worked example: why measurements matter
In this chosen example, you list a pair of jeans tagged size 30 but give no measurements. The buyer finds the waist measures 14 inches laid flat, about 28 inches around, smaller than they expected from a size 30, and opens a case saying the size is not as described. Had the listing included "waist 14 inches flat, inseam 30 inches" and a photo of the tag, the buyer could have checked before buying, and the item would have matched its description. Measurements turn a size dispute into a fit decision the buyer made with full information.
| Listing detail | Without measurements | With measurements |
|---|---|---|
| Tag size shown | Yes | Yes |
| Waist and inseam given | No | Yes |
| Buyer can check fit before buying | No | Yes |
Common mistakes
- Relying on the size tag alone for vintage or altered clothing.
- Omitting small flaws because they seem minor.
- Shipping without any photos of the packed item.
- Accepting payment outside Poshmark.
- Responding to a case with frustration rather than evidence.
Evidence first
On Poshmark, your listing photos, measurements and packing photos are your case response, written before anyone asks. Make the listing match the item and the return process rarely starts.
