From Mercari sale to your bank: ratings, balance and payout timing

Follow a Mercari sale from shipping to payout: when the buyer rates, when earnings reach your balance, Direct Deposit and Instant Pay timing and fees.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example item is delivered on Monday. The buyer doesn’t rate it, so the sale completes Thursday. A Direct Deposit requested that day is processed Friday and could take until the following week to appear.

What you’ll get

  • Each stage between sale and payout.
  • How ratings complete a transaction.
  • Direct Deposit versus Instant Pay.
  • A dated payout timeline.
  • Why payout is not profit.

On Mercari, a delivered item is not yet a paid sale

When a Mercari buyer pays, the money does not go straight to you. The sale is completed when the buyer rates the transaction or Mercari rates it automatically, and only then do your earnings appear in your Mercari balance. From there you choose how and when to move the money to your bank.

Knowing each stage helps you plan cash flow and spot problems early.

Step 1: Follow the order through its stages

StageWhat Mercari says happensYour balance
SaleThe buyer pays and Mercari processes paymentPending
ShippedYou ship and the carrier tracks the parcelPending
DeliveredThe buyer has 3 days to ratePending
Rated or auto-ratedThe transaction is completeEarnings added to balance
WithdrawalDirect Deposit or Instant PayMoves to bank or card

Mercari's ratings guide for sellers, checked November 8, 2026, says buyers are asked to rate within 3 days of confirmed delivery, and if they don't, Mercari automatically rates the transaction with 5 stars. If the buyer contacts Mercari with an issue during that period, the automatic rating is put on hold until it is resolved.

Step 2: Help the rating happen on time

You can't make a buyer rate, but you can remove reasons to delay:

  • Ship quickly with the correct label so tracking updates.
  • Pack carefully so the item arrives in the condition described.
  • Answer buyer messages promptly and politely.
  • Rate the buyer when Mercari invites you to.

Mercari's ratings guide says it can only make positive changes to ratings, and that it removes inappropriate comments but cannot change the star rating itself without a request from the user who left it.

Hold check: A return request or an issue raised during the rating window pauses completion. If your balance isn't growing after delivery, check the Order Status page for an open issue before contacting Support.

Step 3: Choose how to withdraw

Mercari's payout article and fees page describe two methods:

MethodTiming Mercari describesFee
Direct Deposit to checkingProcessed the next business day; can take up to 5 business days to appearNo fee for successful withdrawals; $2 non-refundable fee for failed requests
Instant Pay to eligible debit cardTypically within minutes, up to 30 minutes$3 per cash-out

Mercari's fees page says Instant Pay can be used up to $600 per month, once per day, on eligible debit cards, and its payout article says it requires government ID verification and only Visa and Mastercard debit cards are eligible. Direct Deposits are processed Monday to Friday, excluding bank and Mercari-recognized holidays.

Worked example: when does the money arrive?

In this chosen example, a buyer receives your item on a Monday afternoon and does not rate it. Assuming no issue is raised, Mercari auto-rates the transaction after the 3-day window, around Thursday. You request Direct Deposit that day. It is processed the next business day, Friday, and could take up to 5 business days after processing to arrive, so it might not appear until the following week.

DayEvent in the chosen example
MondayDelivery confirmed
ThursdayAuto-rating completes the sale
ThursdayYou request Direct Deposit
FridayDeposit processed
Up to the following FridayFunds may appear in your bank

If you used Instant Pay on Thursday instead, the money would typically arrive within minutes, for a $3 fee.

Step 4: Reconcile payouts with sales

Your balance shows earnings after Mercari's fees. Mercari's fees page says a 10% selling fee applies to the item price plus buyer-paid shipping for listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025. Match each deposit to the sales it covers, and record the fee and any shipping you paid separately. The Mercari net manual and the payout is not profit manual explain why a deposit is not the same as profit.

Step 5: Fix payout problems carefully

Mercari lists reasons a payout may be rejected or held, including missing or incorrect deposit information, outdated bank details, transactional irregularities and the sale of prohibited items. If your bank details were wrong, contact Mercari Support. Only enter banking information inside the Mercari app or website; never share it with someone who messages you claiming to help.

Common mistakes

  • Counting a delivered order as money in the bank.
  • Paying the Instant Pay fee on every small withdrawal out of habit.
  • Entering incorrect bank details and paying the failed-deposit fee.
  • Not checking for an open issue when completion seems delayed.
  • Treating the deposit total as profit without subtracting costs.

Plan around the real timeline

A Mercari sale becomes your money only after rating and withdrawal, so plan purchases around completed balances, not pending ones. Choose Instant Pay when speed is worth the fee, and Direct Deposit when it isn't.
