Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
Your example game controller looks ready to list at $30. The cable is missing, the parcel weighs more than the controller, and the buyer shipping charge is not yours to keep. The listing needs all three facts.
What you’ll get
- Prepare the actual item and its included parts.
- Check packed shipping rather than an estimate.
- Distinguish sales price, fee base and eventual payout.
Start with the controller you actually have
List included components explicitly. If there is no cable, say so and photograph the contents together. State which functions were tested; do not describe a controller as fully working merely because a light came on.
Choose the correct category and condition, then make the title and photographs agree with those choices. Check the current prohibited-item rules for the actual product before buying or listing it.
Shipping is part of the listing decision
Mercari's official guide, checked November 8, 2026, describes prepaid labels and shipping on your own. Measure the protected parcel, not just the controller, and confirm the service and drop-off location before choosing the option.
Its guidance asks sellers to ship within three business days. Plan around a commitment you can actually meet; do not assume a label can be corrected in every order state. The separate shipping-options guide explains why buyer-paid and seller-paid label changes differ.
Worked example: a $30 price with a $36 fee base
Using the current US 10% seller fee, a chosen $30 item plus $6 buyer-paid shipping produces a $36 fee base and a $3.60 seller fee. The rate and basis are from Mercari's official fee page checked November 8, 2026; the prices are hypothetical.
This does not mean the seller keeps $36 less $3.60. Account for the shipping-label allocation, acquisition, materials and other actual costs separately. Buyer-side fees are not automatically another seller deduction.
Verify completion before calling it earnings
Open orders through your usual platform route. Keep shipping evidence and follow the supported transaction process. Reconcile the order breakdown with the eventual available proceeds rather than making a promise about payout timing.
Price, checkout, fee base and payout are four different numbers. Keep them distinct in your ledger so the first successful transaction teaches you something accurate.

Practical questions
Is the buyer shipping payment all seller profit?
No. Shipping charges have a fulfilment purpose and may enter the seller-fee base. Separate buyer checkout, postage and your actual transaction proceeds.
Can I trust the suggested shipping weight without checking?
No. Mercari tells sellers to confirm weight with the item, packaging and box included. Its estimate may not be accurate for your parcel.
