Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example $60 item sells on Mercari an hour after selling elsewhere. Canceling costs a 5% fee, $3. On a $700 item, the same mistake would cost $25 at the cap.

A canceled sale is visible, and sometimes it costs money
Sometimes a sale can't go ahead: the item was damaged while you packed it, it sold elsewhere, or you realize it isn't what the listing says. Mercari lets sellers cancel in those situations, but it treats cancellations as a marketplace health issue. They appear on the profile of the person who cancels, frequent cancellations can limit an account, and Mercari reserves the right to charge a fee.
The best cancellation strategy is to need very few, and to handle the ones you need quickly and honestly.
What Mercari says about cancellations
Mercari's cancellation articles, checked November 8, 2026, say:
- All Mercari sales are final and should only be canceled if the seller cannot fulfill the order.
- Sellers can cancel if the item is damaged or defective, or if they're unable to fill or ship the order.
- If a seller cancels after the purchase is initiated but before the transaction is completed, Mercari reserves the right to charge a cancellation fee of 5% of the item price, up to $25.
- Order cancellations appear on the profile page of the user who cancels, though they aren't included in the overall review count or star rating.
- Frequent cancellations may result in a warning or account limitation, and a high cancellation rate can become visible to other users.
- If you cancel, you won't be paid for the order, even if it has already been delivered.
Step 1: Prevent the common causes
| Cause | Prevention |
|---|---|
| Item sold on another platform | Delist everywhere immediately after a sale; keep a cross-listing tracker |
| Item can't be found | Give every item a storage location ID |
| Damage found while packing | Inspect before listing, not after the sale |
| Listing doesn't match the item | Photograph and describe the actual item |
| Can't ship in time | List only when you can ship within your window |
The cross-listing manual and the small-space storage guide address the first two causes.
Step 2: If you might need to cancel, talk to the buyer first
Mercari recommends reaching out to the buyer before canceling, and says that if you've noticed a flaw not covered in your description, the buyer may still want the item. Explain the issue plainly with a photo, and let them decide. A buyer who agrees to receive a disclosed flaw is better for both of you than a cancellation.
Message template: "I'm sorry—while packing your order I found a small tear near the hem that wasn't in my photos (photo attached). I can still send it if you'd like, or cancel so you're refunded in full. Which would you prefer?"
Step 3: Cancel through the Order Status page
If cancellation is the right outcome, Mercari says you can cancel by going to the Order Status page and tapping "Refund buyer." Send the buyer a message first so they understand why. Once you confirm, the buyer is refunded to their original payment method.
Step 4: Respond to buyer cancellation requests
Buyers can ask to cancel any time before you confirm shipment. Mercari's pages describe both a 24-hour window to respond by confirming shipment or accepting the request, and the standard shipping window still applying; check the exact deadline shown on the Order Status page for each order. If you've already shipped, tap "I shipped it" so the request doesn't go through by default. If you haven't shipped and the buyer no longer wants the item, accepting the request is usually simpler than shipping something unwanted.
Step 5: Lost-in-transit cancellations are different
Mercari says that if a shipped order's tracking hasn't updated for 30 days or more since the last scan, either the buyer or the seller can cancel from the Order Status page, and those cancellations don't count toward your cancellation rate. For orders shipped with a Mercari prepaid label, Mercari says Shipping Protection is applied and you can be paid your earnings up to $200. Keep your drop-off receipt in case tracking is incomplete.
Worked example: cost of a seller cancellation
In this chosen example, you cancel a $60 sale because the item was damaged while you packed it. If Mercari applies its cancellation fee, 5% of $60 is $3.00, well under the $25 cap. On a $700 item, 5% would be $35, so the fee would be capped at $25.
| Item price | 5% of price | Fee if charged |
|---|---|---|
| $60 | $3.00 | $3.00 |
| $700 | $35.00 | $25.00 (cap) |
The fee is only part of the cost. You also lose the sale, the item may need relisting and the cancellation appears on your profile.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to delist an item that sold elsewhere.
- Canceling without offering the buyer a disclosed-flaw option.
- Ignoring a buyer's cancellation request until it times out.
- Assuming a lost-parcel cancellation counts against you.
- Treating cancellation as a way to reprice an item that sold too cheaply.
The Mercari returns guide covers what happens after delivery.
Fulfill first, cancel last
Mercari treats every sale as a commitment, so delist across platforms immediately, inspect before listing and talk to the buyer before canceling. The few cancellations you need will then be ones you can explain.
