Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example $7 item comes back with a $6 return label attached. Even if it resells, the round trip barely pays. A rule set in advance would have refunded the buyer and let them keep it.

"No returns" does not mean no returns
Every eBay listing needs a return policy, and the setting you choose controls one specific situation: a buyer who simply changes their mind. It does not decide what happens when an item arrives damaged, is the wrong item or does not match your description. Those cases follow eBay's Money Back Guarantee regardless of what your policy says.
Understanding that split is the key to choosing a return policy you can live with.
Step 1: Know the options eBay offers
eBay's return policy help page, checked November 8, 2026, lists five standard choices:
- No returns
- 30-day buyer-paid returns
- 30-day free returns
- 60-day buyer-paid returns
- 60-day free returns
Buyer-paid means the buyer covers return shipping when they change their mind. Free returns mean you cover it. eBay also says some categories, including camera drones, camera lenses, collectibles and art, digital cameras, jewelry, and medical and mobility, can offer a 14-day return period.
Step 2: Separate remorse returns from "not as described"
| Buyer's reason | Does your policy decide? | Who usually pays return shipping |
|---|---|---|
| Changed their mind, ordered wrong size | Yes | As your policy states |
| Item damaged in transit | No | You |
| Item faulty or not working | No | You |
| Item doesn't match the listing | No | You |
| Wrong item sent | No | You |
eBay's guide to handling return requests says that if the item arrived damaged, doesn't match the listing or the buyer received the wrong item, the purchase is covered by the Money Back Guarantee and the buyer can return it even if your policy says you don't accept returns. When you accept such a return, eBay says the buyer gets a full refund including original shipping, and you cover return shipping.
This is why an accurate listing protects you more than a strict policy. Every flaw you photograph and describe is one fewer "not as described" claim. The condition descriptions manual shows how to write them.
Step 3: Choose a policy for your kind of inventory
| Inventory | A policy many sellers consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing and shoes | 30-day buyer-paid | Fit is personal; buyer covers remorse returns |
| Tested electronics | 30-day buyer-paid or free | Buyers expect a chance to test |
| Low-value items | Consider automatic refunds without return | Return postage may exceed the item's value |
| One-of-a-kind collectibles | No returns or 14-day where allowed | Still covered for damage and not-as-described |
These are starting points, not rules. A more generous policy may attract buyers but also invites more remorse returns. Pick what you can afford to honor consistently.
Step 4: Automate the small decisions
eBay's returns preferences let you set rules to approve some returns automatically, or to refund the buyer and let them keep the item when the refund is below an amount you choose, by return reason. That suits low-value items where return postage would cost more than the item is worth.
In this chosen example, you sell many items under $12. A prepaid return label for a typical one would cost you an assumed $6, and inspecting and relisting the returned item takes time. You set a rule to refund without a return for items under $8 when the buyer reports a fault.
| Item price | Return label | Value recovered if returned | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| $7 | $6 | Possibly resell | Refund, buyer keeps item |
| $11 | $6 | Possibly resell | Manual review |
Use your own figures. The automation only applies to future requests; eBay says changes don't apply to returns already in progress.
Step 5: Respond on time
eBay says you have 3 business days to respond when a buyer opens a return request, and if you don't respond, it may refund the buyer and seek reimbursement from you, in some cases without the item coming back. Once a returned item arrives, eBay says you have 2 business days to review it and issue a refund or ask eBay to step in.
If an item comes back used or damaged, eBay says you may qualify to deduct an amount from the refund to cover lost value, but not after eBay has stepped in to help on a not-as-described case. The return arrives manual explains how to document a returned item.
Address check: Add a return address to your account. eBay says that if you don't, returns go to your registered address automatically.
A setup checklist
- Choose a standard policy that fits each type of item.
- Save it as a business policy you can apply to listings.
- Set a return address.
- Add automatic refund or approval rules for low-value items if they suit you.
- Turn on notifications so you see return requests within the response window.
- Photograph items and packaging before shipping so you can compare returns.
Common mistakes
- Believing "no returns" blocks not-as-described claims.
- Leaving flaws out of the listing and relying on the policy.
- Missing the 3-business-day response window.
- Offering free returns on items where return postage wipes out the margin.
- Not keeping photos of the item's condition when it left.
Policy versus protection
Your return policy only governs buyers who change their mind; your listing accuracy governs everything else. Choose a policy you can honor, and describe every item as it really is.
