The model number is the most precise search term there is
A buyer who searches "Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM" or "KitchenAid KSM150PS" knows exactly what they want. If your listing includes that number, it can appear for that search. If it only says "Canon lens" or "red stand mixer", it competes with hundreds of vaguer listings and may not appear at all. Model numbers also prevent mix-ups: two products can look identical and differ in compatibility, features or value.
This guide covers where to find model numbers, how to use them in titles, descriptions and item specifics, and how to avoid errors, with eBay's listing guidance checked November 8, 2026.
What eBay says
| Source | Guidance |
|---|---|
| eBay Seller Center, "Create great listings" | Titles have 80 characters; include brand, model or type, color, style and even the model number; its example title "Nike Boys Blue Lace-Up Sneakers Size 3 AB0011-234" ends with a style number |
| eBay Seller Center, same page | Descriptions should include brand name, style and model numbers |
| eBay Seller Center, "Item specifics" | Together with product identifiers, item specifics are the most important way to help buyers find items; buyers filter by them |
| eBay search manipulation policy | All words must accurately refer to the item; compatible items use "fits", "for" or "compatible with" |
Step 1: Find the number on the item
Common places, by category:
| Category | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Electronics | Label on the back or base, battery compartment, under a stand |
| Kitchen appliances | Underside, back panel, inside a door or lid |
| Cameras and lenses | Base plate, lens barrel markings, lens mount |
| Shoes and sneakers | Size tag inside the tongue or on the inner side; box label |
| Tools | Nameplate on the body; battery packs carry their own numbers |
| Toys and sets | Box, instruction booklet, sometimes molded into pieces |
Photograph the label clearly. A readable photo of the model number reassures buyers and protects you if a question comes up later.
Step 2: Distinguish model, serial and part numbers
Labels often carry several numbers:
- Model number: identifies the product type. Use this.
- Serial number: unique to your individual unit. Don't put it in the listing; it isn't searched for and is better kept private.
- Part or style number: for shoes and clothing, the style code (like "AB0011-234" in eBay's example) identifies the exact colorway and is what collectors search.
Step 3: Verify the number means what you think
Search the number before listing. Check that results show the same product, the same color and the same generation. Manufacturers sometimes reuse names across versions, and a single letter can mark a different region or feature set. If results disagree, use the manufacturer's site to confirm.
Step 4: Put it in the title
With 80 characters on eBay, the model number usually fits at the end of the title. In this chosen example:
- Without: "Canon Camera Lens 50mm Prime Autofocus Black Used"
- With: "Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens Black Autofocus Prime"
The second title spells out the exact model name and lens specification buyers type. Where a product also has a short model code, include it if space allows. The searchable titles guide covers word order.
Step 5: Repeat it in item specifics and the description
eBay's item specifics often include a model or MPN field. Fill it in exactly as on the label. Buyers filtering by model will only see listings with that specific completed. Repeat the number in the description's first line too, as covered in the description order guide. The eBay item specifics guide explains required and recommended fields.
Step 6: Use compatibility wording for accessories
For a charger, case or part that works with a model rather than being that model, eBay's policy requires "fits", "for" or "compatible with" before the compatible item's name: "Charger for Dell Latitude 5420, 65W". Never list an accessory under the main product's model number alone.
Step 7: Check recalls by model
Recalls are usually tied to specific model numbers and date ranges. Search the model on CPSC's recall site before listing appliances, children's products and anything with a battery or heating element. The recall check manual covers the routine.
When there's no model number
Vintage items, handmade pieces and some unbranded goods have none. Don't invent one. Describe the item with measurements, materials, maker's marks and era evidence instead.
A sourcing tip
Model numbers help before you buy, too. Searching the number on your phone at a sale shows recent sold prices for that exact product, not a vaguely similar one. The research prices manual covers reading the results.
Common mistakes
- Using a serial number instead of the model number.
- Listing an accessory under the main product's number without "for" or "compatible with".
- Mistyping a digit, so the listing matches a different product.
- Leaving the model field in item specifics empty.
- Inventing a model number for an unbranded item.
Copy it exactly
The model number, copied exactly from the label into the title, item specifics and first line of the description, is what lets the right buyer find the right item. Verify it, photograph it, and never guess.
