Tax records

Find resale tax-record guides for personal versus business activity, purchase evidence, cost of goods sold and marketplace reporting forms.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example payout arrives after fees, while a reporting document shows a different total. Keep the original records before deciding which number belongs where.

What you’ll get

  • Separate recordkeeping from assumptions about tax owed.
  • Find the correct filing-year explanation for published figures.
  • Connect purchases, sales, fees and adjustments privately.

Start with records, not a guessed tax bill

Keep purchase evidence, actual sale breakdowns, fees, refunds and payout records connected to the relevant stock. A bank transfer may combine several transactions; it is not automatically the same as gross receipts or a completed profit calculation.

This hub publishes no tax rates, reporting thresholds or form-line figures. The detailed pages that do publish figures identify their tax year and official source. Guidance here is general information, not individual tax advice.

Worked example: three records, three jobs

For one hypothetical stock item, a purchase record supports acquisition details, a marketplace sale record explains the sale and adjustments, and a payout record explains the transfer. Those are three evidence roles, even if the amount on each differs.

Do not subtract the same withheld fee again merely because it appears in two reports. Equally, do not discard the sale record because a net transfer reached the bank.

Choose the guide for the actual question

Use personal-versus-business guidance for the activity distinction, cost-of-goods-sold for its labelled method example, and the reporting-form guide for what the document reports. The missing-receipts article concerns honest reconstruction of incomplete purchase evidence.

The official IRS recordkeeping guidance was checked November 8, 2026. A traceable record is useful before any calculator or filing conclusion. Ask a qualified tax professional about unresolved facts and your individual filing position.

Practical questions

Does a reporting form determine all taxable profit?

No. It is not a complete calculation of your business result or every tax obligation. Use the original transaction records and relevant official guidance.

Why are some detailed tax pages labelled with different years?

They identify the filing year supported by the cited figures or form edition. Do not transfer an older example into a different year without checking the correct official guidance.
