Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example buyer wants three paperbacks. At $6 for the first and $2 for each extra, they pay $10 shipping, and the seller checks a chosen $9.40 label still fits.
What you’ll get
- How eBay and Mercari describe multi-item orders.
- A simple first-item and additional-item rule.
- A worked check that the discount covers the label.
- The eBay invoice steps for a combined order.
- When shipping separately is the better choice.
Three orders, one box, and a buyer waiting for a discount
A buyer finds three paperbacks in your shop and asks, before paying, whether you'll combine shipping. You know it makes sense: one box, one label, one trip to the drop-off. But if the shipping charge on the invoice is wrong, either the buyer overpays and feels cheated or you underprice and pay the difference out of the sale. Combined shipping works best when the rule is set before anyone asks.
This guide covers combined shipping for resellers, using eBay's Seller Center shipping page and invoice help article and Mercari's bundle guide, checked November 8, 2026. Other platforms handle multi-item orders differently, so read the current help pages for each one you use.
How the platforms describe it
| Platform | What its pages say |
|---|---|
| eBay Seller Center | You can charge a higher shipping cost for the first item and a lower cost for each additional item, then combine items into one shipment |
| eBay invoices help | You can combine a buyer's purchases into one invoice and offer a shipping discount; you can't send an invoice more than 30 days after the listing ended |
| Mercari bundles | Shoppers can add 2 to 20 items from one seller to the cart, up to a $2,000 maximum, and the bundle ships in one box with a Mercari prepaid label |
| Mercari bundle offers | The seller has 24 hours to accept, decline or counter a bundle offer |
eBay's Seller Center suggests combined shipping suits items that fit easily into one box or envelope, such as collectibles, printed literature, recorded media, clothing and jewelry. Mercari's guide says smaller, lighter items work best and that large, bulky or fragile items can be hard to package safely together.
Decide your rule before listing
Write down one rule per type of item you sell and use it every time. A simple flat-rate example:
- First item: the normal shipping charge.
- Each additional item: a fixed smaller amount.
- Exceptions: anything heavy, fragile or oversized ships separately.
On eBay, the Seller Center describes setting this up in shipping preferences so the discount applies automatically. On platforms where the buyer bundles in the cart, the platform calculates the label, so your job is pricing the items with that in mind.
Worked example: does the discount still cover the label?
In this chosen example, a seller lists paperbacks with $6.00 flat shipping each, and a combined rule of $2.00 for each additional item.
| Order | Buyer pays for shipping | Packed weight | Chosen example label cost | Shipping surplus or gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 paperback | $6.00 | 14 oz | $5.20 | +$0.80 |
| 3 paperbacks | $6.00 + $2.00 + $2.00 = $10.00 | 2 lb 6 oz, billed as 3 lb | $9.40 | +$0.60 |
| 6 paperbacks | $6.00 + 5 × $2.00 = $16.00 | 4 lb 13 oz, billed as 5 lb | $12.10 | +$3.90 |
The label costs here are chosen for the example, not current postage. Use your own label tool's prices for your packed weights and zones. The point is the check: as orders grow, the combined charge should still cover the label, packing and the bigger box. Remember that carriers round weight up, which the shipping scale guide explains.
Step-by-step: combining an eBay order before payment
eBay's invoice article describes this flow:
- Open the buyer's orders in Seller Hub or My eBay.
- Select Send invoice next to one of the items.
- Check the items to include and remove any you don't.
- Add the shipping charge for the combined parcel.
- Preview, then send the invoice.
If the buyer has already paid for each item separately, read eBay's current combined shipping help before you refund any shipping difference, so the refund, fees and your records line up.
Packing a combined order
- Weigh the full parcel after packing, not each item separately.
- Separate items inside the box so they can't rub or crush each other.
- Put the heaviest item on the bottom.
- Include one packing slip listing every item.
- Photograph the open box with all items visible before sealing.
The packing photo matters more for combined orders: if the buyer later says an item was missing, the photo shows what went in. The lost packages guide covers what else to keep.
When not to combine
Some items don't belong in a shared box: a glass vase with heavy books, a battery-powered device with clothing that you'd otherwise ship by a different service, or a combination that pushes the box over the size where dimensional weight applies. If combining makes the parcel larger, riskier or slower, ship separately and explain why.
Media Mail note: Books and recordings may qualify for Media Mail on their own, but a box is eligible only if everything in it qualifies. Adding a non-qualifying item changes the service you can use.
Keep the records tidy
Record one shipping cost against the whole combined order, and link the SKUs that shipped together. When you review profit later, you'll see the real cost per order rather than three labels that never existed.
Common mistakes
- Agreeing to a combined price before weighing the box.
- Forgetting the bigger box costs more.
- Combining fragile and heavy items.
- Recording three label costs for one parcel.
- Missing the 30-day window for eBay invoices.
Set it once, check it twice
A combined shipping rule is only a discount if the label still fits inside it. Set the rule before listing, weigh the full box, and compare what the buyer paid with what the label cost.
