Weather delays and resale shipping: prepare, pack and message first

Handle weather delays in resale shipping: check USPS service alerts, protect parcels from wet and temperature, ship within handling time and message buyers first.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example jacket ships on a Monday, a storm closes roads on Tuesday, and by Thursday tracking is stalled and the buyer is asking. The seller’s next moves are all on a timeline.

What you’ll get

  • What USPS, eBay and UPS say about weather.
  • Packing for rain, snow and temperature.
  • Keeping the scan inside handling time.
  • A delay timeline with message and search dates.
  • Records to keep for delayed orders.

A storm between you and the buyer

A seller ships a jacket on Monday. On Tuesday, a winter storm closes roads across three states, and tracking stops at a processing center. By Thursday, the buyer is asking where their order is, and the seller can see nothing they can do. Weather delays are outside your control, but how you prepare, pack and communicate around them isn't.

This guide covers weather delays in resale shipping, using USPS's service alerts page, eBay's delivery date article, UPS packaging tips and the USPS missing mail page, checked November 8, 2026.

Alerts change daily. Check the USPS page, and your carrier's equivalent, for current conditions rather than relying on the examples here.

Step 1: Check service alerts before shipping days

Make checking the USPS service alerts page part of your shipping routine during storm and hurricane seasons. If an alert covers your area or a buyer's area, you'll know before the buyer asks. Other carriers publish their own alerts.

Step 2: Pack for temperature and moisture

Weather affects parcels as well as routes:

  • Put clothing, paper and books in a plastic bag inside the mailer or box, so rain or snow can't soak through.
  • Protect items sensitive to heat or cold, such as candles, vinyl records, cosmetics, electronics with batteries, and anything with adhesive.
  • UPS notes air bags can lose protection in extreme temperatures; use paper, foam or bubble wrap for fragile items in very hot or cold weather.
  • Tape seams fully so wet cardboard doesn't open.

The fragile items guide covers padding in more detail.

Step 3: Keep shipping on time anyway

Weather after the parcel leaves you is outside your control; getting it scanned within your handling time isn't. eBay measures handling time from payment to carrier scan. If your own area is affected and you can't reach a drop-off, tell buyers promptly and follow your platform's guidance on delays.

Step 4: Tell the buyer before they ask

When an alert affects a shipment, send a short, factual message: when it shipped, what the tracking shows, and that the carrier has posted a weather alert for the area. Buyers are usually patient when they hear first from you. The customer messages guide has templates.

Worked example: a delay timeline

In this chosen example, a parcel mailed on Monday, December 7, is caught in a storm.

DateEventSeller action
Mon, Dec 7Mailed and scannedNormal
Tue, Dec 8Storm alert for buyer's regionNote the alert
Thu, Dec 10Buyer asks; tracking stalledReply with tracking and the alert
Mon, Dec 147 days from mailingIf still stalled, submit a USPS Missing Mail search
LaterDelivered or notClose out, or follow the lost packages guide

The seller doesn't promise a delivery date they can't control, but shows each step they're taking.

Step 5: Adjust listings during severe weather

If you know a big storm is coming in your area, consider extending your handling time temporarily on listings, so new buyers see a realistic estimate, or pausing sales of items that are sensitive to weather. Change it back afterward.

Step 6: Plan stock for seasonal weather

Winter and hurricane seasons bring regular disruptions in some regions. Build a little slack into your shipping plans during those months: ship as early as possible after payment, avoid promising tight delivery dates, and keep weatherproof packing supplies stocked.

Safety first: Don't drive to a drop-off in dangerous conditions to meet a handling deadline. A short delay explained to a buyer is better than an accident.

Records for delayed orders

Save the alert text or a screenshot with the date, alongside the order's tracking. If a buyer opens a case, you can show the delay was a known network disruption and that you shipped on time.

Common mistakes

  • Not checking alerts before shipping days.
  • Packing paper goods without moisture protection.
  • Relying on air pillows in extreme temperatures.
  • Waiting for the buyer to ask about a delay.
  • Promising delivery dates during a known storm.

You control the scan and the message

Weather decides how long the trip takes, but you decide how well the parcel is packed, how fast it's scanned and how quickly the buyer hears from you. Check alerts, waterproof the contents, ship on time and message first.
