Read an eBay selling limit as two budgets: items and total value

Work within eBay selling limits: what they measure, how listings and sales use them, what to list first and how to request an increase properly.

Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller

An example new account can sell 10 items or $500 a month. Four sales and three active listings have used 7 items and $310. Only 3 items and $190 remain, so the next listing choice matters.

What you’ll get

  • How eBay describes selling limits.
  • Two numbers to track, not one.
  • A worked count of what is used and left.
  • A way to choose what to list first.
  • How to ask for a higher limit.

A selling limit is a ceiling on what you can list, not a judgment

New eBay accounts, and established accounts selling in a new category, often find that they can only list a certain number of items or a certain total value each month. eBay describes these limits as a way to help sellers grow in a manageable way and give buyers good service. They are reviewed and can rise over time.

Plan your sourcing around your current limit, and you avoid buying stock you cannot list.

How eBay describes selling limits

eBay's selling limits help page, checked November 8, 2026, explains:

  • You can find your current limit in Seller Hub, on the Overview tab, in the Monthly limits section.
  • eBay reviews accounts every month and adjusts limits automatically based on sales volume and buyer feedback.
  • Both active and sold listings count toward your monthly limit.
  • Good 'Til Cancelled listings count toward limits and won't renew automatically if you've reached the maximum.
  • eBay may end listings created over your existing limit; you can list them again when your allowance renews or increases.

The page also describes category limits: if you're new to selling in a particular category, eBay might limit how much you can sell there, and most category limits are removed automatically once you have a good track record.

Step 1: Read your limit as two numbers

Open the Monthly limits section and note exactly what it shows. If your limit is shown as both a number of items and a total dollar value, treat whichever you reach first as the ceiling, and write both numbers down where you plan purchases.

Chosen example account10 items$500

With that chosen limit, ten $20 items use the full item count while using only $200 of value. Two $250 items use the full value with only two items listed. Your inventory mix determines which ceiling you hit.

Step 2: Count what already uses your allowance

Because both active and sold listings count, a listing that sells early in the month still uses part of your limit. In the chosen example, if four items sold for a total of $160 and three active listings total $150, you have used 7 items and $310, leaving 3 items and $190.

LineItemsValue
Sold this month4$160
Active now3$150
Used7$310
Remaining3$190

Before sourcing, check the remainder. Buying twenty items when you can list three this month only fills your shelves.

Repeat the check before each sourcing trip, not just at the start of the month. A few quick sales can use the remaining allowance faster than you expect.

Step 3: Choose what to list first

When your limit is tight, list items that are most likely to sell quickly at a researched price, so the sold history you build supports future reviews. Keep slower or higher-value pieces for later in the month or the next cycle. Avoid listing one high-value item that uses most of your value limit unless you are confident about its demand.

Do not work around it: eBay says that if you have reached your limit in a category, you shouldn't list items in the wrong category, because that violates its search manipulation policy. Wrong categories also hide items from the buyers searching for them.

Step 4: Ask for an increase properly

eBay says it will message you when you're close to your monthly limit and that you can request an increase from that message or from the selling limits page. It notes that when you request an increase, it may need more information, such as contact or business details. If you have a more established account, eBay says you may be able to link it to raise limits, where that option appears.

What tends to support an increase is the same thing that supports buyers: accurate listings, prompt shipping with tracking, few cancellations and good feedback. The first ten listings manual covers building that early track record.

Step 5: Match your sourcing to your capacity

A selling limit is a useful early-warning system. If you are regularly hitting it, you may be sourcing faster than you can sell. If you have a large backlog, consider listing elsewhere with the cross-listing manual, or slowing purchases until the limit rises. The stale inventory manual helps decide when to stop buying.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that sold items count toward the monthly limit.
  • Buying large lots before checking how much you can list.
  • Using a wrong category to avoid a category limit.
  • Letting Good 'Til Cancelled listings silently fail to renew at the limit.
  • Listing one expensive item that uses the whole value allowance.

Use the limit as a planning tool

Check both the item and value limits before you source, list your most reliable sellers first and let a clean track record raise the ceiling. Buying ahead of your limit only turns cash into storage.

Practical questions

Why does eBay set selling limits?

eBay describes them as a way to help sellers grow in a manageable way and give buyers good service. It reviews accounts monthly and adjusts limits based on sales volume and buyer feedback.

Do active listings and sales both count?

Yes. eBay says both active and sold listings count toward your monthly limit, and Good ’Til Cancelled listings won’t renew automatically once you reach it.

Can I ask for a higher limit?

eBay says it messages you when you’re close to your limit and that you can request an increase from that message or the selling limits page. It may ask for more information.

Should I keep buying stock while limited?

Buy to match what you can list. Unlisted stock ties up cash and space.
