Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example library-sale haul has four books: a clean hardcover graded Like New, a highlighted textbook graded Good, a water-rippled cookbook graded Acceptable, and an advance reading copy that can’t be sold on Amazon.
What you’ll get
- Amazon's book conditions in one table.
- The unacceptable cases to rule out first.
- A five-part grading order.
- Condition notes that name chapters and pages.
- Fees on a typical used book.
A used book's grade sets the buyer's expectation to the page
Book buyers on Amazon know the condition terms. Someone who orders a "Very Good" copy expects intact pages and no highlighting, and they will notice a coffee ring on page 112. Because used books often sell for a few dollars, one return can erase the profit on several sales. Grading accurately is the cheapest way to protect that margin.
This guide uses Amazon's book condition guidelines from its seller article "What are Amazon condition guidelines?", checked November 8, 2026, and turns them into a page-by-page routine.
Amazon's book conditions
| Condition | What Amazon's guidelines describe |
|---|---|
| New | Fresh from the printer, cover, all pages, protective wrapping; marked, labeled or remaindered books don't count |
| Used – Like New | Minor marks or bends on cover, spine, pages or dust cover; dust cover intact; no notes or tears on pages |
| Used – Very Good | Like New plus normal wear, and may be missing shrink wrap, dust cover or boxed set case |
| Used – Good | All pages present, cover intact; spine wear and limited notes or highlighting allowed |
| Used – Acceptable | Wear from the above plus minor water damage that doesn't affect readability |
| Unacceptable | Missing pages, obscured or unreadable text; also advance reading copies and uncorrected proofs |
Collectible books have their own tiers: Collectible Like New, Very Good, Good and Acceptable. Amazon notes that Good condition books generally aren't collectible grade, and that an Acceptable book isn't collectible grade unless it's incredibly rare.
Step 1: Check whether it can be sold at all
Before grading, rule out the Unacceptable cases:
- Flip every page quickly. A missing page or a torn-out section ends it.
- Look at the cover and first pages for "Advance Reading Copy", "Uncorrected Proof" or "Not for resale". Amazon lists these as unacceptable.
- Check for heavy water damage that blurs text.
Amazon's general unacceptable list also includes moldy items, so any musty smell or spotting means the book stays off Amazon.
Step 2: Grade from the outside in
Work in the same order every time:
- Dust jacket, if the edition has one: intact, chipped, torn or missing.
- Cover and spine: bends, creases, rubbing, fading.
- Edges: stains, marks, remainder marks.
- Pages: notes, highlighting, folded corners, stains.
- Binding: tight, loose, cracked.
Step 3: Assign the grade, then go one lower if unsure
In this chosen example, four books come from a library sale:
| Book | Findings | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| Hardcover novel | Jacket intact, tiny bump on one corner, clean pages | Used – Like New |
| Paperback textbook | Highlighting in two chapters, spine creased, all pages present | Used – Good |
| Cookbook | Light water ripple on lower edge, text fully readable | Used – Acceptable |
| Thriller marked "Advance Reading Copy" | Clean | Unacceptable on Amazon |
The textbook shows why notes matter: Amazon's Good allows limited notes or highlighting, but Very Good and Like New don't.
Step 4: Write the condition note
The note should confirm the grade with specifics. For the textbook: "All pages present. Highlighting in chapters 3 and 4 only; no handwritten notes. Spine creased from use; binding tight. No access code included."
Amazon's tips recommend measuring scratches and locating dings; for books, that becomes naming chapters, counting pages with marks and describing the jacket. Say whether supplements like CDs or access codes are present, since buyers of textbooks often assume they are.
Step 5: Check the edition before you match
Amazon's used books usually attach to an existing product page by ISBN. Match the exact ISBN and edition, not just the title. A buyer who orders the 5th edition and receives the 4th has a legitimate complaint, whatever the condition. The used books edition and postage manual and the textbook editions guide cover edition checks.
Step 6: Price after fees
Amazon's pricing page lists media at a 15% referral fee plus a $1.80 closing fee per item. On a book that sells for $8 with $3.99 buyer-paid shipping on the Individual plan, fees are $0.99 + 15% × $11.99 + $1.80 = $0.99 + $1.80 + $1.80 = $4.59, before postage and the book's cost. The Amazon fees guide works more examples.
Common mistakes
- Grading from the cover and never flipping the pages.
- Calling a highlighted book Very Good.
- Listing advance reading copies or proofs.
- Matching to the wrong edition's ISBN.
- Ignoring a musty smell that suggests mold.
Flip every page
A used book's grade is only as reliable as the inspection behind it, and that means every page. Rule out the unacceptable first, grade from the outside in, and let the note confirm the grade.
