Example scenario · illustrative, not a real seller
An example $30 board game leaves $15.51 shipped yourself and $16.71 through FBA at illustrative fees. If the same game takes eight months to sell, aged-inventory charges after 181 days can erase the gap.

- FBA's fees as Amazon lists them.

- Why sales speed matters most.
- A practical split between the two.
FBA trades your time for Amazon's fees
Fulfillment by Amazon sounds like the obvious upgrade: you ship a box of stock to Amazon, and Amazon handles every order, return and customer question. For some resellers it is. For others, especially those selling slow, one-off used items, FBA's storage and aged-inventory fees quietly eat the margin that shipping yourself would have kept.
This guide compares Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM), where you ship each order, with FBA, using Amazon's FBA page and pricing page, both checked November 8, 2026.
What each option means
| FBM (you fulfill) | FBA (Amazon fulfills) | |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Your home or unit | Amazon's fulfillment centers |
| Picking, packing, shipping | You | Amazon |
| Customer service and returns | You | Amazon, per its FBA page |
| Main extra costs | Labels, packaging, your time | Fulfillment, storage and related fees |
| Available on | Either plan | Either plan |
FBA's fees, as Amazon lists them
Amazon's FBA page describes two main costs: fulfillment fees, based on an item's price, weight and dimensions, and monthly storage fees. It also lists other charges that can apply:
- Aged inventory: charged for items stored more than 181 days.
- Returns processing.
- Removal or disposal, if you take stock back or have Amazon dispose of it.
- Inbound placement, related to how Amazon distributes your shipments.
Amazon offers a Revenue Calculator to estimate FBA and FBM costs for a specific product, and its FBA page notes that Professional sellers who sell about 40 items or more a month may find that plan more cost-effective.
This guide doesn't quote fulfillment or storage rates, because they vary by size tier, weight and season. Use the calculator for the actual product.
Step 1: Ask how fast the item sells
FBA works best for items that sell soon after arriving at Amazon. The aged-inventory charge after 181 days is aimed exactly at stock that doesn't. If an item has sold steadily at your price in recent months, it's an FBA candidate. If it's a one-off collectible that might take a year, FBM keeps it on your shelf for free.
The sell-through guide shows how to estimate how quickly a type of item moves.
Step 2: Ask how big and heavy it is
Fulfillment fees rise with size and weight, and storage is charged on space. A small, light, fast-selling item is the best case for FBA. A bulky, slow item is the worst.
Step 3: Compare one item both ways
In this chosen example, a used board game sells for $30 on the Individual plan with a 15% referral fee. The FBM and FBA costs below are illustrative figures you'd replace with the Revenue Calculator's numbers and your own label rate:
| Line | FBM | FBA |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $30.00 | $30.00 |
| Plan fee | $0.99 | $0.99 |
| Referral fee, 15% | $4.50 | $4.50 |
| Your label and packaging (example) | $9.00 | — |
| Fulfillment fee (example) | — | $6.50 |
| Share of inbound shipping (example) | — | $1.00 |
| Storage for a few weeks (example) | — | $0.30 |
| Left before item cost | $15.51 | $16.71 |
At these example figures, FBA leaves $1.20 more and saves the packing time. Change the assumption to a game that takes eight months to sell, and aged-inventory charges start to apply, which can wipe that out. That's why speed matters more than the headline fulfillment fee.
Step 4: Count your time honestly
FBM costs you time per order: printing, packing, dropping off, answering questions and handling returns. FBA costs you time in batches: preparing and labeling shipments to Amazon. The true hourly tool helps compare the two.
Step 5: Consider condition and returns
Used items carry condition notes. With FBA, Amazon handles returns, so you see the outcome rather than the process. Grade conservatively using the Amazon condition guidelines, because an item that comes back may not be resellable at the same grade.
A mixed approach
Many resellers don't pick one. A practical split:
- FBA: fast, small, replaceable items with steady sales.
- FBM: one-off, fragile, bulky or slow items.
Review the split every few months. Anything heading toward 181 days in FBA is a candidate for a price cut or removal before the aged charge applies.
Common mistakes
- Comparing FBA's fulfillment fee with your label cost and ignoring storage.
- Sending slow collectibles to FBA and paying to store them for months.
- Forgetting inbound shipping and placement costs.
- Valuing your own packing time at zero.
- Never checking which FBA items are nearing the aged-inventory threshold.
The Amazon fees guide covers the referral and plan fees that apply either way.
Speed decides
FBA pays when items arrive and leave quickly; FBM pays when they wait. Sort your stock by how fast it sells before deciding where it lives.
